The 4th District Interviews Continued: Selden Spencer
Selden Spencer, the Huxley neurologist who challenged 4th district Representative Tom Latham in 2006, chose not to run again, but the interest his campaign generated helped spark this year’s lively primary contest. On May 1, Spencer spoke with the Progressive for the first time since our February issue on his thoughts about the primary and general election and his current role in Democratic Party politics.
The 4th District Democratic Primary Interviews

Four candidates are vying for the chance to take on longtime Republican Representative Tom Latham this fall in a Democratic primary to be held June 3 for Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. Once a safe Republican district, strong sentiments against their party this year combined with strong challengers may have changed that — the Democratic Congressional Candidate Committee has declared the upcoming contest a nationally targeted race to mark Latham’s perceived vulnerability. Over the course of the last two months, the Progressive spoke with each candidate to get their thoughts on the race. Read them here:

Ames Libertarians Kick off Statehouse Bids
Two local Libertarian Party candidates kicked off their Statehouse bids April 29 at the Bali Satay House in Ames. Twenty-three-year-old Campbell DeSousa will challenge incumbent Democrat Beth Wessel-Kroeschell in House District 45, while veteran contender Eric Cooper, associate professor of psychology at Iowa State University, will again take on House District 46 Democrat Lisa Heddens.
